Embedded tutoring is a mode where tutors work actively with a professor in a course. These embedded tutors will often attend lecture and help students there; Penji provides a mechanism for a tutor to log those interactions, while not displaying any new buttons to students (this is a tutor/admin-only feature).
How it Works
Penji will configure a special version of Sections for your community (you must request this change from us). Your Sections model will be turned on, allowing you to use admin and tutor-side features as normal, but disabling any student-facing button to join these Sections.
Step 1: Upload Lectures as Sections
In your Sections CSV upload, create a row for each lecture that a tutor will be attending. Some notes on columns:
- Name the section appropriately, eg. "CHEM 1133 - MWF 11A, Henderson"
- Student Capacity should be set to 999 or some large number
- Student Attendance can be required or optional
- If multiple tutors attend a single lecture, you'll need to create multiple rows, one for each tutor
- Pick a location
Upload this Sections CSV (example image below). These sections will now appear on your tutors' Teach screen.
Step 2: Upload Invites
Edit your Student Invites CSV as described in this article. Add all students in a given lecture to the appropriate Section.
Step 3: Tutor Logs Interactions
Just like with a normal section, the tutor will log attendance through their Penji mobile app (or web browser). You'll know that these attendance submissions are in-lecture support delivered, instead of the traditional meaning of a student attending a full group session. The true attendance log will likely be 25-200 students long (will be alphabetized) instead of the short example shown below.
